| 1949 APRIL 1 (FRIDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM [P] (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Tom Mahoney defeated Bobby Lane > Rex Mobley and Jim Wallis wrestled to a draw > Al Massey defeated Jack Kelly > Nick Carter & Don McIntyre defeated Rebel Russell & Babe Zaharias / Notes: The program we have for this card is the first to not list staff members of the Atlanta office, so we must assume the same people referenced before may or may not be still involved. We do know that Bill Hartman and Simon Davis are referenced in future programs, so they are likely still involved at this point in the same positions. One new name that surfaces in this program is Betty Anne Wood, who is credited with writing the “Ringside Roundup” column. Within this program, there is also a reference to the fact that the main event matches may be aired on local television, though it does not state where this can be found in regard to station. It simply states that “television goes on at 10:00 sharp and televises the remaining part of the matches” with a reference that Thad Horton’s radio coverage is perhaps simulcast for the television end as well. It does appear as though it may have just begun recently, as it is in answer to “many fans are questioning” where they can find it. Seems odd they would answer the question without fully answering it, stating only what time it appears, without directing you to a specific channel. In research, there were only two local television stations in Atlanta, being WSB Channel 8 (now Channel 2), which debuted on September 29, 1948, and WAGA Channel 5, first broadcasting on March 8, 1949. In this same program, a nod is given to a WAGA employee (Marian Hine) being in attendance as a guest at ringside, so it is more likely that the younger station of the two was giving some exposure to the late matches in order to offer programming to viewers captivated by the early days of television. It would be 1954 before the promotion got its first full time slot for airing programs produced to provide enough excitement to draw fans to the local arenas. It was announced that Lozano Martinez had contacted Paul Jones for some Atlanta bookings. The program we have for this card still does not list staff credits, but the aforementioned Betty Anne Wood is not credited with writing the same column as previously given credit for. Instead, the column is credited to “J. M.”, and we have no idea who that would be. However, Wood shows up again in the next program we have for the July 15, 1949, card. It was announced that Red McIntyre would be wrestling in Atlanta soon.
