| Former boxer Al Massey burst onto the wrestling scene in Georgia in 1942, and quickly became the top babyface, feuding with all the top heels thrown at him, including Al Galento, Don Lee, Babe Zaharias, Art Nelson, Jim Coffield, Tom Mahoney, and Cowboy Luttrall. Massey wrestled in the final match of an ongoing tournament to name the inaugural Southern Heavyweight Champion, but lost to Mahoney. However, he eventually won the title in 1951, and he was often selected as the opponent to face the NWA World Heavyweight Champion as they came through the state. By 1952, he had run out of steam in Georgia, but returned in 1957 for his final run. |
