| Roger Mackay first wrestled in Georgia under a mask, known as the heelish Mighty Yankee, in 1951. It was a brief visit, but he came back sans the hood in 1955, taking on heels such as Jerry Graham, Freddie Blassie, Boris Kalmikoff, and Paul DeGaulle. Together with Jackie Nichols, they won Georgia’s version of the World Tag Team Championship from Freddie and Mickey Blassie in January 1956. Two months later, they dropped the belts to Jack O’Brien and Pierre LaSalle, and Mackay left the territory. He returned in late 1957, once again as the Mighty Yankee, and stayed through May 1958, and came back for a final run in 1960. As the Yankee, Mackay feuded with all the top babyfaces, including Don McIntyre, Ray Gunkel, Bibber McCoy, Billy Red Lyons, Bill Dromo, Chief Little Eagle, Leo Garibaldi, and Dick Steinborn. A three-time (and possibly four) Southern Heavyweight Champion in Georgia, he also teamed with Don Lee to earn a brief run with the International Tag Team Title. With the persona of the Yankee, Mackay was one of the most hated men to ever come through Georgia. |
