Pro Wrestling Evolution returned to their home base at the Canton National Guard Armory Saturday night. The show marked the return on Senshi/Low Ki to PWE. It also featured the unforgettable sight of Deep South Wrestling play-by-play man Nigel Sherrod wrestling in a Fans Bring the Weapons Match.

“New South Rising” was one of the better wrestling shows PWE has put on. Unfortunately, it drew the deadest (and at 125 one of the smallest over the last year) crowd of any of the PWE events I’ve attended. ROH style matches didn’t excite them. Old school didn’t either. The only way to get heat out of these people might be to douse them with gasoline and light the SOBs on fire.

Ring announcer Jen Holbrook opened with a 10 bell salute to John Tenta.

(1) Maul (with Logan Chase) beat Lamar Phillips in 32 seconds

Chase demanded competition for his masked henchman. That would be Phillips. Maul laid Phillips to waste with a chokeslam.

(2) TVMA (Kyle Matthews & Andrew Alexander) beat The Hooligans (Devin & Mason Cutter) and “Dark Horse” Caleb Conley & Famous Shamus and Adam Jacobs & Bobby Hill in an elimination style four-way to retain the Evolution Tag Team Cup (23:07)

Alexander’s prematch promo got as much heat as anything all night long. It was hard to hear, but he made mention of the fact that gays can’t get married in the state of Georgia. You know what kind of heat that got. Hooligan’s look reeked of low level indieness. Fortunately, their wrestling was somewhat better. TVMA work well as a team. Matthews’ work was really crisp. If he only had more size. Conley does some nice stuff. One thing for sure, Jacobs was several levels above anyone else in the match. It was mostly heat on Shamus in the early going. Shamus and Conley eliminated Hooligans with a crucifix powerbomb/missile dropkick combo at 7:53. Conley was taking heat from Jacobs and Hill, but Matthews made a blind tag and TVMA picked up where they left off. Alexander boosted Matthews off his shoulder into a guillotine legdrop on Conley for a near fall. TVMA killed Shamus dead with a reverse lungblower/top rope double stomp combo at 13:14. Jacobs hit a flip dive on TVMA that was right on target. Jacobs LEVELED Matthews with a back elbow. A vertical suplex followed and Alexander had to break up the pin. Jacobs took heat from TVMA. Matthews hit a beauty of a leg lariat, and Jacobs rolled out of the ring where he took punishment from Alexander. Jacobs came back with a sitout reverse DDT and made the tag, but ref Chris Ganz didn’t see it. Jacobs hit a back suplex, but TVMA rendered Hill unavailable for a tag. Double lariat and both men down to set up the hot tag. The finish saw Hill get pushed into Jacobs and rolled up by Matthews with a helping hand from Alexander. Jacobs made no secret of his displeasure with Hill. Jacobs finally gave Hill a quick handshake and walked away from him.

Ki came to the ring. Ki said he was going to deliver on his promise to become the Evolution Wrestling Champion. Ki said he lost a split-second decision the last time and he accepted it. Ki said that April 22, Chavis was an unexpected opponent, but tonight, Chavis knew Ki was coming for him.

(3) “Captain Crunk” Carl Wilson beat Nigel Sherrod in a fans bring the weapon match (10:50)

OK match for what it was. It pitted Sherrod, who has been doing a heel commissioner role for this group, versus his former assistant/lackey. They had been building to this blowoff for awhile, as Wilson suffered one humiliation after another at the hands of Sherrod. The obligatory cart full of plunder was placed at ringside. Sherrod was decked out in a “Phenom” robe that was about 10 sizes too large and a pair of Stan Lane’s boots. “I’m a rose of a man,” said Sherrod. Wilson decked him. Sherrod got a license plate from Senior Official Ken Wallace and whacked Wilson with it. It turned into a track meet, out of the building and into the concession area. A shower curtain rod came into play. Wallace announced that Wilson was barred from using weapons. Sherrod delivered some lame shots with the curtain rod. They battled on the floor where Wilson gave Sherrod not one, but two Ole! Ole! Kicks. Wilson tried to use a chair but Wallace took it away in the nick of time. Sherrod hid behind a security guy and whacked Wilson with a baking pan. Wilson got good color. Sherrod grabbed a barbed wire bat, but Wilson caught him with a lariat. Wilson got the barbed wire bat. Wallace wasn’t too keen about blocking Wilson’s use of weapons anymore. Wilson connected with a barbed wire bat shot to Sherrod’s gut. Sherrod was screaming like a banshee. Sherrod cowered in the corner of the building. Wilson threw a trash can into the ring and dragged Sherrod back in there. Wilson applied a bizarre apparatus to Sherrod’s gonads. Sherrod came back with a low blow. Sherrod used the trash can on Wilson. Sherrod went for a tire iron. Wilson blocked it. Wilson whacked Sherrod with a stop sign. Wilson gave Sherrod a tornado DDT onto the stop sign, and Wallace made the reluctant three count.

(4) Biohazard beat Amen Rios via submission in 11:56

Good match. Best Biohazard match I’ve seen in quite a while. Rios tossed an American flag into the ring and let it lay on the mat. A couple of semi-retarded rednecks got all fired up about it, but the rest of the crowd was as dead as ever. Biohazard’s entrance was a lot more impactful here than it is at Deep South. The match opened with a nice sequence of matwork. Biohazard took Rios down with a sweep kick and tried to choke him out. Rios reversed to a Fujiwara armbar. Biohazard reversed and tossed Rios around. Biohazard leveled Rios with a charging forearm. Biohazard climbed for his pet rolling neck snap and Rios rolled out of the ring. The match did a 180 when Rios whipped Biohazard into the post. Rios used a gutbuster for a near fall. Rios smothered Biohazard with the ring apron. Geez, has that spot ever gotten popular lately. With Rios on the outside, the ref started the count in English and then switched to Spanish. Rios applied a grounded sleeper. Biohazard’s arm dropped twice, but not the third time. A jawbreaker forced Rios to let loose. Biohazard sprung from his knees to hit an enzuigiri. Biohazard launched a full-fledged comeback. Biohazard nailed Rios with a discus forearm but Rios was in the ropes. Rios went for an up and over. Nobody home. Biohazard rolled through with a single leg crab for the tap out.

Postmatch, Rios was fixing to burn the American flag in the middle of the ring when a little guy in military garb ran in to stop him. Rios was going to haul off and hit the guy, but he got nailed by Biohazard. Rios took a chair to Biohazard’s knee. Rios wrapped Biohazard’s knee inside the chair and gave a stomp off the middle rope. Biohazard was carried to the back. Holbrook said he would be receiving medical attention.

(5) Kid Ego Jr. beat Jonathan Davis and Kameron Kade in a three-way dance to retain the Evolution Southern Junior Championship in 12:08

This was the spotfest of the evening. Way more hits than misses, and all three got a chance to shine. Not that this crowd got excited or anything. Ego and Davis are two talented little guys. Kade looked tons better than he did at the NFWA show last month. Ego carried it in terms of personality and facial expressions. Handshakes all around. Ego suggested a three way knucklelock. It was spot-spot-spot from there. Ego hit a springboard leg lariat and applied a Boston crab on Davis. Kade broke it up with an enzuigiri on Ego. Kade suplexed Davis into the turnbuckles. Fans laughed when Davis totally missed a quebrada. Kade got things back on track with a northern lights suplex on Davis. Ego made the save. Kade powerbomed Ego, and Davis simultaneously hit a top rope sunset flip to eliminate Kade at 7:07. Well-timed finish. Davis caught fire with a jumping snap kick and a double underhook backbreaker for a near fall. Ego responded with a very cool step-up senton backsplash for a near fall. Brainbustah! But Davis was in the ropes. Davis spiked Ego’s head into the mat with reverse huracanrana for an awesome near fall. Ego roared back to hit a cutthroat version of Salvatore Rinuaro’s Phoenix Fury Legdrop (pumphandle Michinoku Driver II). Davis miraculously kicked out. Ego got the pin with a spinning fireman’s carry slam.

(6) Brad Armstrong & Darin Childs (with Rachael Putski) beat Murder One & Jacob Ladder in 11:11

Standard tag match. Putski is going with a slutty ECW look. She was wearing the push up bra to end all push up bras. I was afraid she might explode right out of it. The artwork on Ladder’s body never ceases to amaze me. Armstrong got a decent round of applause. Ladder said Armstong was a physical specimen and Childs looked like a specimen from the bottom of his toilet. Ladder and Childs opened the match with the best back and forth sequence of wrestling I’ve ever seen from either one of them. Armstrong worked over the arms M-1 and Ladder. Then the heels got heat on Childs. Childs ran the ropes to build up steam and it was both men down on a double lariat. Childs spiked Ladder with a DDT and made the tag. Armstrong nailed M-1 with a haymaker and high kneelift, and pinned him clean with the floatover Russian legsweep. After the match, Ladder shook Armstrong’s hand. “You paved the road. I’m just walking in now.”

(7) Kory Chavis beat Low Ki to retain the Evolution Wrestling Championship in 19:15

Solid match. Nothing spectacular. With Ki scheduled for the TNA PPV tonight, it wasn’t the time to be pulling out all the stops. Chavis avoided a kick from Ki and bailed out to think things over. They locked up. Chavis backed Ki into the corner. Ki backed up the ropes and applied a hanging cross armbreaker. Chavis’ shoulder was in a bad way. Chavis tried to buy time. Ki went right after the shoulder and put Chavis on his back for a one count. At 4:30, Chavis unleashed a barrage of strikes and choked Ki over the ropes. Ki fired back with a series of four stiff chops to put Chavis on the mat. Ki hiptossed Chavis for a two count. Ki fired more chops for another near fall. When Ki went for a rear naked choke, Chavis dumped him out of the ring. Chavis hit a double axhandle blow at ringside. Back inside, Chavis went to work on Ki’s shoulder bigtime. Chavis used a butterfly suplex and a back suplex for near falls. The crowd came to life and got behind Ki, who started making brief comebacks. Chavis was able to cut them off, but he was showing the effects. Ki hit a springboard enzuigiri. The crowd chanted “Ki.” Ki connected with a trio of lariats. Chavis was begging for a timeout. Ki used a high backdrop but Chavis was in the ropes. Ki hit a bridging butterfly suplex for a long two count. Ki blasted Chavis with two stiff kicks in the chest and one to the face, but Chavis was in the ropes again. Chavis rallied with a Dark City Bomb for a near fall. Ki came right back with a facebuster for a two count. Ki climbed to the top for the double stomp, but Chavis had it scouted. Chavis had Ki set up for the Dark City Street Cutter, but Ki countered with Bite of the Dragon. Great spot. The finish was a letdown. Ki went for a rolling reverse cradle, and Chavis rolled through to pin Ki with a fistful of tights.

The crowd applauded for Ki’s performance. Ki asked if they wanted to see it one more time so he could beat the pants off of “Chavez.” That got a pop. “You got it,” said Ki. The match was made for 7/15.
