Deep South Wrestling ran their second event of the summer at Six Flags over Georgia Friday night featuring Big Show retaining the ECW title against Rob Van Dam in the main event.

Unfortunately, DSW didn’t fare as well as their first time out, either in terms of attendance (400) or atmosphere. With local schools going back in session next Monday, it wasn't the best day to draw. The park had started closing at 7pm because of school, which forced a last minute move to a 5pm bell time. Atlanta broke its grueling string of 90 degrees days Friday. Not by much, though, and the combination of heat and humidity made far from ideal conditions for an outdoor wrestling event.

The crowd was mainly kids and teenagers whose wrestling interest was confined to WWE television. They treated the DSW matches politely, even injecting a little heat on a few occasions, but they were clearly there to see the TV superstars.

(1) Kenny Omega beat Shamus McCarthy

I missed the first two matches because of the earlier start time. This was said to be a solid aerial/technical match with McCarthy’s inexperience not showing through. Omega won it with a Go to Sleep style knee to the face.

(2) Freakin Deacon beat Bradley Jay

Short but Jay did get some offense. Deacon used something like the Vader bear hug clap as his finisher.

(3) Tommy Suede beat Matt Striker in around 8 minutes

Striker did a good job working the crowd to draw heat. His offense looked good working against Suede, who is close to the same size. Striker used the ropes for a flippy armbar reversal, dropkicked Suede in the back to hang him up in the ropes and then used a basement dropkick to send him out to the concrete. Nice sequence. Striker got a near fall with the Rude Awakening. Striker used the ropes to block a Russian legsweep and hit his finisher, but Suede kicked out. It was comeback time. Suede took a horrible half-speed chest bump into the buckles. Striker rolled him up using the ropes. No go. Suede schoolboyed Striker for the 1-2-3.

(4) Tracy Taylor beat Krissy Vaine in 6:25

This was a case of two hot looking women in match that just didn’t click. Tracy admonished Vaine’s bad behavior with a slap on the ass. They did a long lock up. Vaine clubbed Tracy from behind. Tracy dropped Vaine on her face a couple of times, and Tracy applied a Hawaiian leglock. Vaine called for a time out. Vaine pulled out her compact and gave Tracy a face full of powder. Vaine slammed Tracy’s face into the mat. Vaine insulted the crowd for being so dead. Vaine choked Tracy over the ropes. The crowd got behind Tracy. Vaine hit a snap suplex and hooked the leg. Vaine pouted when Rob Russo failed to count three. Both down on a double hair slam. Tracy on the comeback trail. Vaine got her knees up on Tracy’s splash. Bad spot as it was obvious that Tracy was aiming at Vaine’s knees. Taylor ducked Vaine’s mad charge into the corner and got her with a roll up. Vaine attacked Taylor after the match.

(5) Mike Knox beat Brian Majors (with Brett Majors) in 4:55

Knox got a mild “ECW” chant. Knox absorbed Brian’s babyface flurry and bailed out. He was confronted by Brett. Knox slapped Brett across the face. Then he reached up and gave Brian a Stunner style hotshot. Knox beat on Brian. At 3:30, Brian ducked a kick of death and hit a DDT for a double down spot. Brian made the comeback with some less than stellar atomic drops. Brian escaped from a powerslam and tried for a high crossbody. Knox blocked it with ease and hit the Whippit.

(6) Oleg Prudius beat Damien Steele in 1:14

As usual, Prudius murdered the Russian national anthem. Then he murdered Steele with power moves. Prudius pressed Steele over his head and dropped him across the top ropes. Prudius then scooped Steele off the top ropes into a fallaway slam. Prudius won it with a torture rack drop to a kneeling position.

(7) High Impact (Tony Santarelli & Mike Taylor with Tracy Taylor) beat Urban Assault (Sonny Siaki & Eric Perez) to retain the DSW tag titles in 18:02

Good match. It had the most heat of any of the DSW bouts. Impact got somewhat of a pop. Assault worked the crowd. They did a bit where Santarelli threatened to throw Siaki’s shirt into the crowd. First half of the match was all Impact. They went to work on Perez with a nice sequence of blows in their corner. Santarelli used a drop toehold on Siaki. Fans liked seeing Siaki land flat on his face. Siaki went for the shortcuts, but Mike came out on top. Taylor ran out of a hammerlock, and Perez took a nasty bump on the concrete. Finally, Perez distracted Nick Patrick and Siaki posted Mike’s shoulder. Assault duped Patrick big time, as they destroyed Mike’s shoulder. Patrick failed to see a legit tag and Santarelli went crazy. Perez then used a divorce court on Mike for a near fall. Mike’s leg lariat to set up the hot tag was right on the money. It started to break down to four way action. Mike appeared to suffer an injury on a middle rope elbow drop. Santarelli picked Perez off the top rope with Mr. Toad’s Magical Soup (Halo kick). But Siaki caught Santarelli with a powerslam. Santarelli rolled to the outside, creating an awkward pause with Siaki standing in the ring alone. I’m guessing that Mike’s injury caused the glitch. When the action resumed, Siaki superkicked Santarelli and Taylor made a save. Perez hit the Annexation of Puerto Rico while Patrick was distracted, but Santarelli kicked out of Siaki’s cover. Siaki tried another powerslam and Santarelli rolled through to score the pinfall. Postmatch, Assault dumped Santarelli and laid Taylor out with a belt shot.

(8) “Rough House” Ryan O’Reilly pinned Montel Vontavious Porter to retain the DSW Heavyweight title in 8:22

Nigel Sherrod introduced MVP as a Smackdown superstar. Either these folks weren’t watching last week or they didn’t care. Luscious came out to collect MVP’s bling. O’Reilly used MVP’s towel to wipe the sweat out of his armpits. MVP demanded an apology for the disrespect. Smooth exchange of the mat here. MVP dished out some payback by rubbing O’Reilly’s face in the mat. O’Reilly assumed control of the situation until MVP cheated on the break. MVP scored with a knockdown Irish whip. MVP stayed on O’Reilly’s back with a camel clutch. O’Reilly came back with a spinebuster for a near fall. O’Reilly crashed and burned on a diving headbutt. MVP went for the Playmaker and O’Reilly countered with a roll up. A lot of sore losers tonight, as MVP also jumped O’Reilly in the postmatch.

(9) Big Show retained the ECW title over Rob Van Dam in 7:06

The crowd was into this one. RVD got the big pop. Most of the fans ran down to the barricade to slap hands with him. A lot of people wanted to do the same with Show, but he just glared at them. Show did a lot of glaring during this match. The Strong “ECW” chant here. Show instructed Sherrod to announce that he was the only individual in wrestling history to hold the WWE, WCW and ECW belts. RVD flashed a spin kick in front of Show’s face. Show said he didn’t do that stuff. Show mocked the martial arts crap with a crane pose. RVD threw another kick. Show called time out. Show caught RVD off guard but then ate a boot charging in. RVD dropkicked Show and delivered a series of shoulder blocks in the corner. RVD choked Show with his boot. Show powered out and clubbed RVD’s leg. Show battered RVD with a chop and a headbutt. RVD tried to attack Show’s knee. Show leveled him with a big boot and did the Hog Log for a near fall. RVD collapsed to the mat after taking another massive chop. RVD managed to snap Show’s throat off the top rope. RVD hit a Rider kick. Show was taken off his feet for a one count. RVD hit Rolling Thunder for a two count. Show goozled Van Dam, but RVD countered with a DDT. RVD was up at five with a spring to the top rope. Van Dam went for a splash (not a full-blown Five Star), but Show got his knees up. Show hit the chokeslam for the pin.

NOTES: Ric Flair will be the feature attraction when DSW returns to Six Flags with a Saturday night show on September 9…DSW also has a house show scheduled in Griffin, Ga at Rushton Mills on 9/23.
