Due to some internal conflicts and logistical headaches, this show was thrown together almost literally at the last minute so the potholes were plenty and noticeable, but there was enough of a veteran poise to pull it all together to get to the finish line. As expected, attendance was low and there were a few inebriated morons in the crowd, but as the booker of DSHW astutely pointed out at the onset this show was a "litmus test" for January 26, a show that's actually planned. 1) Sinn defeated Morbid Angel in 12:19 due to interference from T-Money. Good for what it was, but seemed to drag a bit too far for some people's tastes, including my own. 2) Frizza defeated Frickin "A" by countout at 8:11 in one of the most ridiculous finishes in recent history, as Frickin "A" was forced into an icebox. In my opinion, the match did little to put anyone over or set up any long-term programs. The Jerk, billed as the SXW Florida titlist, cut a promo. He seemed to stumble on his words and the delivery was off, but I was able to gather that since the title was a Florida-exclusive title, he was exempt from title defenses outside the state. At least that's where I thought he was going with it. He then throws down the gauntlet for a challenge to any wrestler in the locker room. Unknown Artist answered, which led to.... 3) The Jerk defeated Unknown Artist in 7:51. There were several things that were wrong with this match. The execution of the match was off, and the moves were haphazardly sold on both parties involved. What's worse, the wrestler NOT holding a title didn't go over in what was billed as a non-title bout, so the possibility of a future title bout with fan interest is immediately wiped out. The saving grace here was that Jerk seemed to garner a bit of crowd heat for being...well, a jerk. Dan Masters of I-95.5 The Rock Of Savannah, looking dapper in his blazer, introduced Dallas Riley and Morgan Davis. Riley has this aura about him that can naturally antagonize those around him, and with the pesky Morgan Davis at his side it almost naturally made him a marked man in the eyes of those in attendance. I didn't catch much of what he said, but with the crowd irritated at these arrogant pricks in the ring, it didn't matter. Masters ran down the accomplishments of and introduced Vordell Walker, who came out to one of the loudest pops of the night. Walker cuts a solid promo and sends the crowd into a mini-frenzy, prompting Riley and Davis to make a hasty retreat to the back. This of course set up their match for later in the evening. 4) Phoenix defeated T-Money in 8:22. Phoenix was a masked wrestler who had a rudimentary element that is sorely missed in the indies- actual wrestling gear. I know it's little to crow about, but you'd be surprised to find out how many indy promotions have 95% of their workers in street clothes. T-Money put together the most convincing-looking offense of the night at that point, and Phoenix did some effective selling as well. There was an incident during the match where Phoenix took a bump on the outside and tripped on some electrical wires, which caused the lighting and sound equipment to cut out temporarily. This caused quite a mess, but not enough to completely deter the match. 5) Ugly Kidd Joe defeated Emo Kid by disqualification when Frizza interfered in the match. Can't really give a fair assessment of this match as I was tied up with a couple of business matters at the moment. Intermission at this point. The equipment snafu took a bit of the steam out of the crowd, which Scotty Bullwinkle quickly restored by riling them up with a profanity-laced tirade. 6) Sebastian Troy defeated Ash Kristiansen in 13:44. This was by far the match of the night in my opinon. The workrate was fast-paced, Kristiansen continues to be an effective heel, both of these young men bumped their butts off, and the finish was as old-school as Joe Sample & the Crusaders, with Kristiansen rolling up Troy in the corner using the ropes for leverage, only to see the referee overturn the decision to the chagrin of Kristiansen, who confronts said referee and gets a shove into the waiting clutches of Troy, who promptly rolls him up for the pin. Both of these guys have a tremendous upside and, with a bit of veteran guidance, will have fruitful careers. Then again, that goes for a lot of these guys. 7) The Gangsta Nation (G-Smooth & E-Dawg) defeated Drive-By & Night Train w/an unknown manager at 6:13. This was a Texas Tornado match and the two teams were off to the races, brawling with a fervor the likes of which kept the crowd entralled in the action. The crowd seemed to be split down the middle. The match was going in favor of Night Train & Drive-By until G-Smooth incorporated the GN's instrument of choice- forks. E-Dawg took out all three adversaries with a chair, and Night Train in particular with a corner cannonball splash that took the wind out of him. The finish saw the Dawg KO Drive-By with a variation of the Ace crusher, which Drive-By sold convincingly. Post-match the losing team got into an argument that, despite the efforts of their srupulous manager, escalated into fisticuffs, which Night Train got the better of. This could lead to a program later on. I was told later, however, that the Gangsta Nation was impressed with Drive-By's efforts. 8. Vordell Walker defeated Dallas Riley w/Morgan Davis by disqualification at 7:44. This was a surprsingly snugly-worked match given the style differences of these two. Walker immediately got the crowd behind him from the opening bell. Riley and Davis irritated Walker and the crowd a great deal, to which Walker responded by using open-hand and back-hand chops to make Riley's stenum into a slab of meat from Rocky and using kicks that made him writhe in excruciating pain. At some point in the match I believe Riley got injured and it adversely affected the match finish, as Davis ran into the ring unexpectedly and took out Walker from behind to cause Riley to get disqualified. Walker eventually got the upper hand and sent the two scurring to the back. It should be noted that there was an unexpected wardrobe snafu on the part of Riley that exposed his backside, to which caused everyone, the workers included, to burst out in hysterical laughter as Riley continued to try to work the match. Walker, capitalizing on this embarrasing moment, took a belt from a fan, positioned Riley on the top turnbuckle, bare fanny exposed, and gave him the kind of corporal punishment that many in the business feel was sorely missed as a child for one Dallas Riley. 9) In the main event, Cameron Larue defeated Scotty Bullwinkle, Teddy Baddstreet and SXW's Morbid Angel in 16:12 to become the first DSHW Heavyweight Champion. This match was the result of on-the-fly booking due to the electric accident earlier and the confusion that followed. Before the match, Bullwinkle further elaborated on his earlier rambuctious speech that was probably fueled by a mix of adrenaline and beer. Teddy Baddstreet cut a promo putting over his opponents' perserverence despite the trials and red tape from earlier incompetant promoters. Morbid Angel seemed to disagree with Teddy's shoot-like sentiments, thus painting a proverbial bulls-eye on his chest, a decision he would almost immediately regret. This match ratcheded up the ultraviolence, as chairs, chains and lighttubes (!) were used to bludgeon each other. Bullwinkle Irish-whipped Angel into a door, which, to the unfortunante surprise of Angel, revealed the Gangsta Nation, who apparently weren't satisfied with the carnage from earlier and were no doubt miffed by the SXW representative's insolence, as they made a beeline for him. The most disturbing moment of the night saw G-Smooth douse Morbid Angel with lighter fluid, and with E-Dawg and Cameron holding him to the mat, take a match and turn Angel into wrestler flambe! After doing a "stop, drop and roll", Angel was pinned to give Larue the match and the title. Afterwards as Baddstreet, Larue, Bullwinkle and the Nation celebrated their insurgency in the ring to the cheers of the crowd, Baddstreet thanked the fans for coming out and the DSHW and SXW locker room for their efforts. He informed them that Down South Hardcore Wrestling's next event will be back at the Multiplex in Darien, Georgia on January 26, and also promised to have a much tigher-ran presentation for that show. For a hastily put-together show, it was a great collective effort and I personally am looking forward to the next show. |
