Southern Extreme Championship Wrestling ran their weekly show in Villa Rica Sunday night. The promotion is moving to new digs at the VFW Arena in nearby Carrollton (former home of Rock Parsons’ short-lived All-Star Championship Wrestling) starting next Sunday. More on that later.

Attendance for last night’s show was right at 275. A portion of the proceeds went to assist with the medical bills of Bob Rogers, a diehard SECW fan who recently underwent quadruple bypass surgery.

(1) Kyle Matthews beat Dark Star (with Miss Rebecca) in 6:13. Matthews needs to do more to connect with the crowd as a babyface. Star is a bargain basement and much smaller version of Abyss, except he takes the mask off to wrestle. As ugly as Star is, he should leave it on. Star jumped Matthews to set up a well-timed choke spot by Rebecca, where she was leaning against the post examining her nails by the time the ref turned around. Rebecca later whipped Matthews with what appeared to be a looped section of bungee cord. Matthews’ signature dropkick turned the tide. He hit a slingshot senton but Star got a foot over the ropes. Matthews won it with a middle rope flying bodypress. The low ceiling limits top rope moves here, which is one of the good things about the move. Star took wimpy punishment lashes from Rebecca’s bungee cord for losing.

(2) In a match that went into overtime, Adrian Hawkins pinned Sal Rinauro in 12:01. A few weeks back I wrote that J-Rod had my vote for Georgia’s most improved wrestler for 2007, but I’m going to have call it tie with Hawkins. He’s added size, improved his look, and advanced his inring skills dramatically over the past 12 months. Rinauro did his chicken heel bit. It never fails to get the crowd going because Rinauro does the best chicken imitation in the business. Hawkins made the mistake of taking his eyes off of Rinauro. The crowd was hot for Hawkins’ comeback. He’s as over as any babyface they have. Rinauro used a unique neckbreaker, where he drops to his knees like a jawbreaker, except he’s behind his opponent and the point of contact is the base of the neck. Hawkins nailed the springboard back elbow and showed great fire on the comeback. Rinauro responded with a wacky lucha submission. As Hawkins flew off the ropes, Rinauro caught him with a superkick for a near fall. Rinauro had Hawkins locked in a submission as the 10 minute time limit expired. Rinauro said if Hawkins was a man, he would give him 5 more minutes. Promoter Scott East OKed the extension. Rinauro continued his attack with a hangman neckbreaker and an overconfident cover. Rinauro went for a victory roll and Hawkins blocked it for the pinfall. Rinauro threw a kicking, screaming fit. These guys have worked each other a lot and it showed. Good match.

First intermission. You would think two intermissions on a five match show would be overkill, but it works fine here, just as it does in Columbus. The socializing is a much a part of the show as the wrestling.

(3) El Mexicano pinned Austin Creed with his feet on the ropes in 16:19. Improved young wrestlers turned out to be the theme of the night. They started slow, but then it was solid back and forth action. Creed personalized the “USA” chant for Mexicano. “It’s not about you, ese.“ They got into a stiff exchange of chops at ringside. Creed ate a knee as he tried a shoulder block through the ropes, and Mexicano planted him with a hanging DDT. More chops from Creed. He ate an elbow to the chops on an attempted Stinger Splash. Mexicano grounded Creed by working on the knee. Mexicano got two with a basement dropkick. Creed went up and over and right into a spinning heel kick. Nice. Both men down. Creed missed another corner splash and got nailed with a thigh kick for a near fall. Creed connected with an enzuigiri for a near fall. Creed went for the 10 punches. Mexicano upended him and used the ropes. Not a crisp finish, which was a shame after such a good match. I would love to see Mexicano get a shot with Anarchy.

Creed said he wanted that chump the next time. East said he would review the DVD and give Creed a rematch if it was warranted with a different referee.

(4) Frankie Valentine beat Billy Love in 11:12. Valentine is over, as are all the young babyfaces, which is a major positive for any wrestling promotion. Valentine hit a springboard twisting crossbody and Love went into the Zbysko stall. Love took a great looking monkey flip. Love opened up on Valentine and did a number on his arm. Valentine came back with chain wrestling (imagine that) to a side headlock, but Love countered with a back suplex and got back on the arm. Valentine pounded the mat to signal a comeback. Flying crucifix for a near fall, spinning headscissors, dropkick and the 10 punches. Referee Scott DeWeese got sandwiched. The professionalism of the refs could stand some upgrading. Spanky Emerson is fine, but DeWeese and Scooter look like they just got picked out of the crowd. Mexicano hit the ring. Love and Mexicano went for a double suplex, but Nightmare grabbed Mexicano’s leg and Valentine landed on top of Love for the three count. Valentine and Nightmare sent the heels packing.

Nightmare challenged Love to a mask vs. hair match of next week. Nightmare said Tommy Rich almost lost his hair and guaranteed a head shaving for Love. East told Love if he wanted to wrestle for SECW he had to do the match. Valentine then challenged Mexicano to an Ironman match. East Oked that as well.

(5) Bull Buchanan & Nightmare beat Super Destroyer & Bulldog Raines when Buchanan pinned Destroyer at 14:03. Destroyer cut a funny promo. He looked very familiar. Destroyer said he wore the mask due to a skin condition and didn’t want to risk an infection in “this cesspool of filth,” unlike Nightmare who was probably a criminal. He said he had been trying to get a housing authority (I hope to God not FEMA) to do something about all the trailer parks in Villa Ricca. “One good wind and y’all are going to be homeless.” The heels attacked and went for the whip collision but the faces did the dosey-do. Buchanan was out for revenge and gave a highly motivated performance. Raines tried to make friends. Buchanan pounded Raines in the kidneys. Buchanan ripped his shirt open and invited Destroyer to chop him. It turned into a chopfest with Buchanan no selling Destroyer’s stuff. Nightmare got trapped in the heel corner but fought his way out for the tag. Buchanan wailed away on Destroyer’s gut. Japanese lariat, slam, elbow drop and Raines saved. Buchanan and Nightmare did a double wishbone groin stretcher on the heels, sorta like the old row boat spot. Nightmare got dumped by Raines and took a hotshot on the rail from Destroyer. East said there were 15 minutes gone. He not averse to shaving a little time. Buchanan hiptossed Nightmare back to their corner and tagged himself in. The crowd liked that spot. Buchanan hit the ax kick on Destroyer. The bell rang but it was clearly only a two count as Raines saved. Buchanan then pinned Destroyer with his version of the Black Hole Slam.

Buchanan said he knew he could beat that punk with a fair shot, and he wanted the title back (stripped when Buchanan went to Japan). Buchanan asked East to do him a favor and give him the title shot next week instead of Buff Bagwell. Buchanan said he would call Bagwell and make it right. Buchanan said East could give Bagwell his purse because he would do the match for free. East said the card wasn’t set in stone, so Buchanan could have the match. The heels hit the ring. The faces beat them back. A wild brawl in the crowd ensued. Destroyer ran away and Raines ended up taking a beating to end the show.

The lineup for the first SECW show at the VFW Arena in Carrollton on 1/6 includes Buchanan vs. Destroyer for the SECW Title, Nighmare vs. Love in a mask vs. hair, Valentine vs. Mexicano in an Ironman, along with apperances by Bagwell and “Bullet” Bob Armstrong. It will also be a Bill Dromo night. Dromo was a major Georgia wrestling star of the 60s and 70s, who held heavyweight titles in Columbus and Augusta.
