MY FIRST AND LAST MATCH
– Dick Steinborn
June 1, 2003
My first match was in Baltimore against Les Ruffin in 1951. Scott Teal from Whatever Happened To…? tells me that my first match was
with Johnny Heidman in Jamaica Arena. For some reason I can’t recall that match. Over the years I have always believed that it was
with Les in Baltimore.
My last match was thirty-three years later in Costa Rica. I wrestled the Hawk. He was a local favorite. He was wrestling in Guatemala,
Panama, and Costa Rica was his home country, which was my last match in San Jose. Let me tell you the ending.
I place a full nelson on the Hawk and slam his head into the turn buckle. I do this about five or six times in a twenty minute match.
Finally, at the ending, as I applied a full nelson and went to run his head into the turnbuckle, I held him up as he brought both feet off the
mat to kick the top turnbuckle. Both of us, (while I still had the full nelson secured) fell back, and I held on to the full nelson. Both of us
are pinned. Here comes the three count. I jump up and raise my hand up. The referee grabs my upheld hand and simultaneously
brings my hand down, while raising the Hawk’s hand.
Pure joy to the local fans. My finish.
