ABOUT J.C. DYKES
– Dick Steinborn

October 22, 2007

I pulled a simple rib on J.C. Dykes when he was in the Atlanta territory. And because of that rib J.C. almost gave his notice. He was
serious about the whole bit.

Dykes was managing The Infernos, Frankie Cain and Roger Smith. Then, in Columbus, Georgia, this team faced Greg Peterson and me
in the main event for five weeks in a row, totally selling out the Columbus Auditorium each time.

I always carried a couple of cameras in my bag, taking pictures of the boys to be put in my scrapbooks .

Dykes was always a neat freak in the dressing room. Everything had to be just right; newspapers on the floor where he sat so his socks
wouldn’t get dirty, and then he’d whip out the shoe polish and brush to shine his boots.

One night at the City Auditorium in Atlanta as I came around the dressing room where J.C. was shining his boots, I went and got my
shoes and put them down next to him, asking if he had time to include mine as he brushed away. He agreed. Then, when he slipped out
to go to the bathroom, I rushed to each dressing room scooping up everyone’s shoes, carefully placing them around his chair. I left
the dressing room to retrieve my camera. I waited about five minutes until I was sure J.C. had returned to his shoe brushing.

Of course, he must have had a smirk on his face when he had to wade through all of those shoes to start brushing again. I showed up
with the camera and took the picture. I developed it in my darkroom, and brought it back to the booker in Atlanta, Leo Garibaldi. Leo also
handled the layout of the weekly programs that were sold on Friday night.

Leo had a brain storm. He was going to take my rib, and in turn, rib J.C.

Leo plastered the picture in the program and put a caption underneath the photo of J.C. brushing his boots with about 18 other shoes
surrounding him waiting their turn.

I didn’t know until the following week what the caption Leo had over that picture would read. It read, “Dykes earns extra money
while managing The Infernos.

Well, J.C. walked into the office to give his notice because of that picture in the program. Leo later told me they had to do some smooth
talking to keep J.C. in Georgia.

Hope you enjoyed the story. My longtime friends, Leo Garibaldi and Red Bastein now are fighting the invisible opponent, Mr. Alzheimers.
