MOONRUNNERS
– Dick Steinborn
April 18, 2008
When the pilot film for the Dukes of Hazzard was made, it was filmed between Atlanta and Columbus, Georgia. The pilot film was called â
€œMoonrunnersâ€.
I was with Gunkel Enterprises at the time, and Ann Gunkel, through some close connections in Atlanta with Ted Turner, got a few
wrestlers booked on the pilot film. When the movie opened up, wrestler Ricky Hunter was smashed in the face with a guitar.
El Mongol made an appearance. Spanky McFarlane was the bartender. They needed someone to take some kind of hellacious bump
after she slugs the victim. I volunteered. They sat me at the bar and while Bestoink was in the backroom talking to Jim Mitchum (Roberts
Mitchum’s son), Spanky the bartender and I got into an argument. Spanky was short for her size and stocky.
Earlier, I rehearsed with her on how to hit me a good punch under my left ear. I kept telling her to keep her eye continuously on the spot
she was going to throw that punch. I kept turning away and allowing her to pull me back and throw that punch. After about ten tries, she
had it down pat.
I’ve worked on a few other movies and found out that even if you don’t have a speaking part, if you blurt something out
spontaneously, and it makes sense, the brass will leave it in and you get paid extra.
When director Gy Waldron hollered, “Action!, Spanky came around the bar and the cameras zoomed in for close-ups. I blurted
out, “I just offered you $5.00. That’s 2 cents a pound. I turned away, and she pulled me back and threw the best shooting
punch any woman would be proud of. I believe she got over-excited. I flipped in the air, bringing my legs down over the end of the table,
pole vaulting the glasses and beer bottles up and over onto the bar.
My last scene was being dragged out of that building by two officers of the law.
Not bad work for $300.00 for one day. It was fun.
