The Bruiser had been the reigning US Heavyweight Champion as recognized by the Detroit, MI, office, since he defeated Bobo Brazil on February 28, 1961, in Detroit. For some reason it was being called the AWA World Heavyweight Title here, and the Bruiser was being billed as such. Paul Jones made a final appearance in his regular column, stating that he was retiring so he and his wife could spend more time together. It has widely been reported that he had really stepped back his efforts and allowed McIntyre, Ray Gunkel, and Freddie Blassie handle the promotional and booking chores that he had long been credited for to this point. At our best estimation, the passing of the torch actually began around 1955 or 1956. He reportedly sold most of his shares in the promotion to McIntyre around this time.
