Fans protested that the Assassins pulled a switch during the match between Assassin #2 & the Pro and Ray Gunkel & Buddy Fuller. Assassin #2 had limped to the ring prior to the match. Assassin #1, who had come to ringside during the bout with no limp at all, and both Assassins were limping to the dressing room following the match. FEBRUARY 14, 1969 (FRIDAY) ATLANTA, GA PAUL JONES SPORTS ARENA [P] (Paul Jones Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Jim Wilson, Alberto Torres & El Mongol defeated the Professional & the Assassins Notes: It was reported in the program for this card that NWA President Sam Muchnick had been in Atlanta earlier that week for a meeting to address the aforementioned investigation into the January 24, 1969, match between El Mongol and the Professional, where it was alleged that the Pro used a foreign object during the bout. It said that Muchnick and the NWA Board felt that since they had never received any such claims against the Pro, he had an exemplary record, and that a referee should never change a decision based on claims and protests by fans, thus they were reprimanding referee Leo Garibaldi for changing his decision. It then mentioned that the NWA was also reviewing claims submitted to them about the February 7, 1969, match between Assassin #2 & the Professional and Ray Gunkel & Buddy Fuller, where it had been alleged that Assassin #1 replaced his partner during the match. Ray Gunkel joined Capral as a co-host on this episode, and was confronted by the Assassins. At one point, one of the Assassins slapped Gunkel in the face, but Gunkel kept his composure, leaving the Assassins claiming he was a coward. Gunkel, however, stated to Capral as the Assassins left the area that as a commentator, he felt he should be partly responsible for maintaining order rather than contributing to chaos. It was announced that the World Tag Team Title was being held up pending a review by the NWA of the match between the Assassins and Ray Gunkel & Buddy Fuller on February 28, 1969. During their match against Ray Gunkel & Buddy Fuller, Assassin #2 & the Pro squabbled about something in their corner, and Assassin #1 charged the ring, dropkicking Fuller and knocking him from the ring, resulting in referee Leo Garibaldi counting him out. El Mongol had been the reigning Georgia Heavyweight Champion since he defeated Dale Lewis on February 7, 1969, in Atlanta. According to the program for this card, the results of the NWA investigation into the February 28, 1969, match between the Assassins and Ray Gunkel & Buddy Fuller, where Jack Crawford interfered, were announced. It was decided that since the Assassins had fired Crawford, showing they disapproved of his actions on their behalf, they would only be reprimanded and fined. However, the World Tag Team Title held by the Assassins was still held up pending further investigation in the matter. It was reported that Crawford admitted to the actions, but accused the Assassins of giving him specific instructions to interfere if they got into any trouble and the title seemed to be in jeopardy. Still, his admission of guilt resulted in the NWA suspending him from Georgia indefinitely. The Professional joined Ed Capral to announce that he was no longer associated with the Assassins, as he felt he was being used to carry the load, and had become increasingly concerned about his status with the team since they treated Jack Crawford they way they did. MARCH 29, 1969 (SATURDAY) ATLANTA, GA ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM [P] (Paul Jones Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > World Tag Team Title Match: Ray Gunkel & Buddy Fuller defeated the Assassins* to win title Notes: The Assassins had been the reigning World Tag Team Champions since they defeated Ray Gunkel & Buddy Fuller on December 20, 1968, in Atlanta. It was announced that there would be a one-night tournament for the Georgia Tag Team Title on the card on April 4, 1969. The title had been held up after the NWA reportedly reviewed the match where Assassin #2 & the Professional defeated Ray Gunkel & Buddy Fuller by countout on March 21, 1969, despite the countout rule being waived for the match. The NWA said not only did the referee ignore the waived rule, but the match should have stopped completely when anyone other than the legal men entered the ring. Next |
