JANUARY 4, 1918 (FRIDAY) SAVANNAH, GA LIBERTY THEATRE (Max Bauman Promoter) > Strangler Lewis and Wladek Zbyszko wrestled to a draw at 75:00 Notes: Billy Sandow managed Strangler Lewis. Wladek Zbyszko had vowed he would defeat Strangler Lewis in straight falls, and since he did not, the Savannah Morning News considered this a defeat for him. There must have been some outcry against Greco-Roman rules, as Bauman said he would never use them again, and would only use catch-as-catch-can rules. Lewis was mentioned as the World champion in the newspaper advertisement, but it was likely a misprint as Earl Caddock was the champion at that time, having been awarded the title when Joe Stecher forfeited a second fall to him in Omaha, NE, on April 9, 1917. It was reported that Lewis broke a rib during the match, though it is questionable as to whether this was legitimate. MAY 26, 1927 (THURSDAY) ATLANTA, GA ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM (John Contos Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > World Heavyweight Title Match: Joe Stecher* defeated Wladek Zbyszko Notes: Joe Stecher was declared the winner of his match when Wladek Zbyszko was deemed unable to continue. Zbyszko had fallen from the ring during the second fall, causing injuries. As a result, both men had their pay held up pending a review of the incident. Stecher had been the reigning World Heavyweight Champion since he defeated Stanislaus Zbyszko in St. Louis, MO, on May 30, 1925. This version was the one linked back to George Hackenschmidt. MAY 27, 1927 (FRIDAY) Notes: It was reported that the Athletic Commission instructed John Contos to release the wrestlers pay from the card on May 26, 1927. It was mentioned that Wladek Zbyszko was paid $169, but Joe Stechers pay was not disclosed. In the release, Contos was referred to as the matchmaker, whereas Fuzzy Woodruff was credited as being the promoter of the event. It is unclear exactly what role Woodruff actually played, if any, within the promotion.
