RHYNO, TNA, AND A JAB AT SOME GEORGIA PROMOTIONS

July 16, 2006 – Mick N. Brawler

When Rich told me we were going back online and starting my columns with a clean slate, I was chomping at the bit to rag on the decline of Great Championship Wrestling.  But after my last several visits to the little engine that once could, I realized that not only should they change the name again … this time to Not-So-Great Championship Wrestling … but they simply are no longer important enough to the Georgia scene to even be considered a factor.

Then I thought of the other promotions and which ones I have attended recently.  Nothing much there grabbing me either, with the exception of Deep South Wrestling, Anarchy, and Pro Wrestling Evolution.  People keep telling me to go down to Enigma and see what all the hubbub is about with the Georgia Wrestling Alliance, but hey, gas is hovering around $3.00 per gallon, and let’s face it … until Rich comes across with some royalties for the extremely wonderful articles I write for GWH, Enigma must wait.  There are other promotions, but they are barely a blip on my radar.

So what I decided to do was take a look at TNA.  No real reason, aside from the fact that they shot themselves in the foot in a major way last week.

Impact! opened with a promo by Rhyno that irked me to no end.  I have been following TNA for a while now, and always wanted them to succeed, but when they open a program with one of the guys ripping on Vince McMahon, the WWE, and the doomed ECW Jr., it spells desperation.  That’s D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-I-O-N.

I couldn’t tell if it was TNA allowing Rhyno to go on a legitimate shoot rant over their broadcast, or if TNA was really that desperate to draw attention to themselves.  Either way, and you know McMahon watches, the WWE folks have got to find it as hilarious as I did.  Or sad.  A little of both, I guess.

See, here’s the thing; TNA, even when they first started up, was never going to compete with WWE.  If they thought there was even the slightest chance of doing so, then they are all idiots.  No one who competes with Vince beats Vince.  History has shown that, and TNA needs to forget about competing and make their own damn niche in this industry.

TNA has several positive things going on, but this was like taking ten steps back within a five minute promo.  It showed that they are looking for a promotional war of some sort.  They want WWE to mention them on WWE programming, and that is just not going to happen.  All Rhyno and TNA did the other night was give free publicity to WWE, while proving that they still don’t get it.

If you prefer watching wrestling, TNA is still a better product than any of the TV versions WWE puts forth.  The wrestling to skit ratio is heavily balanced in favor of TNA.  But TNA can’t look at long term growth if they continue to pull stunts like this.

Maybe next time I will write something about the Georgia scene.  Hopefully, someone will give me enough inspiration to do so.  Or Rich will send money when I win the Pulitzer for my brilliant masterpieces.

Email me with your thoughts.  If I like it, maybe I’ll post it.  If I don’t, I could always use the spare toilet tissue.
