| TERRY FUNK TAKES BUMP OVER GARBAGE CANS FOR $40
November 1, 2003 – Dick Steinborn He is a good one about Terry Funk. I was on a six-week tour in Japan with Bruno Sammartino, Dick Murdock, and the Funk Brothers, among others. On our last night, we all sat around the lobby of the new Japan Hotel reminiscing about our tour and ready to return to the States the next day. Terry comes bursting through the lobby telling his brother Dory that two Japanese girls had invited him to a club close by where everything would be free. The club just wanted celebrities like wrestlers to be seen. Dory, Jr., declined and I took Terry up on his invitation. It was only two blocks away from the hotel. As we showed up in the inconspicuous building, there stood two Japanese girls standing at the top of the steps leading into the building. Terry kept telling me on the way to the club how one of these girls looked like Sophia Loren. Sure enough when we got there this girl had her eyes operated on to look more Caucasian than Asian and indeed looked like the movie star. What a surprise it was to enter this building to see over four hundred people sitting at tables where acrobats were performing on the stage. It looked like a Las Vegas revue. It was truly a Geisha House. We were escorted down the aisle to the front table. You could hear the patrons recognizing us as American wrestlers who appeared on their weekly wrestling shows all over Asia. As we settled in an elderly lady joined us at our table. A short while later the two ladies left and didn’t return. I ordered a half of a grapefruit and Terry ordered a glass of orange juice. After twenty minutes with not much more to say, we decided to leave. The Mama San presented a bill to Terry charging $85.00 American for our visit. Terry looked shocked. I pulled out two twenties and donated it to the bill. As we left the building, we descended the steep steps to the sidewalk. We walked about fifteen feet with Terry a few feet in front of me. I noticed a dark alley on the right where I ducked into quickly, placing my back up against the wall. I hollered, “Terry, Terry, help me, Terry!” As my cohort came running around the corner, I grabbed him by his right arm and threw a tremendous forearm blow to Terry’s chest, pushing him backwards, where he lost his balance and fell over a bunch of garbage cans. I took off running back to the hotel. Dory, Jr., was still sitting there, along with Dick Murdock, Sam Bass and Mike Paidousis. Dory asked me, “How was it?” “Okay,” I replied. Then Terry comes through the lobby, his clothes in a little disarray, passing us by saying, “See you guys tomorrow.” Nothing was ever said about this again. I got my $40.00 worth. |
